We lit small, bright lights that still shine

Message from Rabia Balkhi in Afghanistan

'From the day darkness cast its shadow over our land and the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, an idea began to grow in our hearts: to create spaces where girls could continue learning, healing, and hoping.

Although our capacity was limited, we refused to let hope fade. With the little strength we had, we lit small, but bright lights—home-based schools that offer not only education, but safety, dignity, and renewal. These spaces also empower teachers by providing them with sustainable livelihoods.

Across Kabul, Mazar-e-Sharif, and Badakhshan, we have supported students in completing their secondary education, while also offering vocational training such as tailoring to build independence and resilience.

The journey has been marked by significant financial challenges. Yet through determination and sacrifice, two schools continue to operate, guiding students each year toward brighter futures.

Our impact is measured not only in numbers, but in transformation—in the confidence of a girl who returns to learning, in the smile that replaces sorrow, and in the hope that begins to grow again.

With continued support, we aim to expand these efforts and reach even more girls in need.'

Thank you.
